The Proposed Developement

The development of a 116 metre by 76 metre Astroturf pitch at Greenane, Kanturk, for the benefit of the local schools and sports clubs of Kanturk town and surrounding area.

Background

Kanturk Community Astroturf Ltd was incorporated in March of 2019 with the support of ten schools and sports clubs of Kanturk town. The objective is the development of an Astroturf pitch for the youths and children of the local residents of the community of Kanturk town and surrounding area.

With the support of Colaiste Treasa, a site to the rear of the Gymnasium has been secured by way of a long term lease for this development from Cork County Council, subject to a successful planning application.  Furthermore Cork ETB (Colaiste Treasa), have agreed to facilitate a pedestrian walkway around the perimeter of their Gym to enable pedestrian access to a lighted walkway 1.2 metres in width around the Astro turf pitch. In addition there will be access to Colaiste Treasas changing rooms for users of the Astroturf facility.

This development will bring the following benefits to the town of Kanturk

-        An all-weather Astro-turf pitch for all types of sports in all types of weather conditions

-        An independent company ‘Kanturk Astroturf Community Ltd, representing the users of the pitch will manage the facility, upkeep, security and venue bookings

-        The provision of a pedestrian walkway around the pitch with bollard lighting 1.2m in width to provide a local amenity to link town parks

-        Two way vehicular access with ample on-site parking facilities

Subject to planning permission this facility will be developed through a mixture of grant aid and local contributions and represents a unique opportunity for an Astro-Turf pitch to be built at a reasonable cost given it is leveraging off existing sporting facilities. The project will be of huge benefit to the school children of kanturk and those involved in sports, and will bring sports events within walking distance of the residents of Kanturk.

Further information sessions will be arranged in the coming months in particular in relation to fundraising efforts to realise this project costing approximately €650k for pitch establishment and LED lighting, CCTV and fencing, Approx. €100 for parking  and pedestrian access.

Subject to a successful application Kanturk Community Astroturf Ltd will be seeking support in pursuing fundraising options. One of the fundraising options envisaged will be an opportunity for individuals, families and companies to sponsor part of the playing surface of the field.
