Full planning has been secured for the development of a 116 metre by 76 metre Astroturf pitch at Greenane, Kanturk, and construction will shortly commence for the benefit of the local schools and sports clubs of Kanturk town and the surrounding area.
The development of an Astroturf pitch will benefit the youths and children of the local residents of the community of Kanturk town and surrounding area and will be a fantastic addition to town amenities.
Located to the rear of Colaiste Treasa Gym, the site has been secured for this development from Cork County Council by way of a 30 year lease. Colaiste Treasa are kindly facilitating the construction of a pedestrian walkway around the perimeter of their Gym to enable pedestrian access along with access to changing rooms when suitable.
The Astro-turf Pitch will provide the following amenities:
An all-weather Astro-turf pitch for all types of sports in all types of weather conditions
Kanturk Astroturf Community Ltd will manage the facility itself, its upkeep, security and booking management
The provision of a 1.5m pedestrian walkway around the pitch with bollard lighting will allow pedestrian linkage to the town pathways and parks
Two way vehicular access with generous on-site parking facilities
Upgrading of access roadway and lighting
This facility will be developed through a mixture of grant aid and local contributions and represents a unique opportunity for an Astro-Turf pitch to be built at a reasonable cost given it is leveraging off existing sporting facilities. The project will be of huge benefit to the youths and school children of Kanturk and those involved in sports, and will bring sports events within walking distance of the schools and residents of Kanturk town.
Kanturk Community Astroturf Ltd will be seeking support in the form of fundraising for this valuable project in the near future for which more details will follow in due course.
